Building Strong Foundations in Irish

Primary school is a vital time for developing confidence and positive attitudes towards Irish. My primary Irish lessons focus on helping children build strong foundations, develop a genuine connection with the language, and feel confident using Irish both in and outside the classroom.

With over 15 years’ experience as a primary school teacher, including working in a Gaelscoil, I have a deep understanding of how Irish is taught and used across different primary school settings. This experience allows me to support children from both English-medium schools and Gaelscoileanna, tailoring lessons to meet their individual needs.

Strong Emphasis on Oral Language & Confidence

At primary level, a strong focus is placed on spoken Irish, as oral language underpins all future progress. Drawing on my Gaelscoil experience, lessons encourage children to use Irish naturally through conversation, repetition, games, and structured language input in a supportive environment.

Children are encouraged to build confidence at their own pace, with lessons adapted to suit their learning style, ability, and level of exposure to Irish.

Support Across All Primary Levels

I work with children across all primary year groups, supporting:

• Early language development in the junior classes

• Reinforcement and confidence-building in the middle and senior classes

• Pupils attending Gaelscoileanna who wish to strengthen fluency and accuracy

• Pupils in English-medium schools who need extra support or confidence with Irish

Lessons are carefully structured yet engaging, helping children progress steadily while enjoying their learning.

My aim is to create a positive space where children feel comfortable speaking Irish, making mistakes, and developing confidence. By building strong oral skills early, children are well prepared for continued success in Irish as they move through primary school and beyond.
